Training FAQs
1. How long does it take to get my PPL?
Timing depends on your pathway. Full-time students typically finish in around six months, while part-time students train at their own pace — most complete their Private Pilot Licence in two to six months by flying once or twice a week and staying consistent with lessons.
Detail: Part-time is self-paced, but we recommend aiming for at least one lesson a week so you don’t lose time re-covering material you’ve already learned.

3. How often should I fly as a part-time student?
We recommend flying once or twice a week if you’re training part-time, which typically leads to completion in two to six months. Flying at least once a week helps you retain skills and avoid wasting lesson time recapping earlier material — though your ideal pace depends on your schedule and budget.
4. What do I need to do before I start training?
You don’t need anything special to start lessons, but before flying solo you must hold a Class 2 Aviation Medical Certificate and an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC). Neither is required to begin training, so it’s worth starting the applications early to avoid delays later.
5. Is the theory difficult?
The theory needs commitment and motivation rather than any background in maths or science. We teach using simplified diagrams and charts, and classroom-based learning helps concepts stick. Many students haven’t studied in years and still pass comfortably, because the course is built to be genuinely learnable.
6. Can I hire a helicopter after I get my licence?
Yes. Once you’ve completed your training with V2 Helicopters, you’re eligible to hire our aircraft. We only rent to pilots who trained with us, which lets us be confident our helicopters are being flown safely and looked after properly.
7. Can you land a helicopter anywhere?
Almost anywhere, provided you have the landowner’s permission and the site is large enough for a safe landing. This flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of flying helicopters over fixed-wing aircraft, and it opens up a huge range of destinations once you’re licensed.
8. Where can I fly once I have my PPL?
Licensed pilots can land at venues within about an hour of Archerfield, including Spicers Peak Lodge, Sirromet Winery, Spicers Gold Coast, Eagle Heights Hotel, Sanctuary Cove, Couran Cove, Jupiters Casino, the Noosa AFL club, Tangalooma Resort and many more partner locations.
9. Is there anything else I need to buy before training starts?
No, your training and materials package covers everything you need to begin. Headsets are provided in all training helicopters, though many students eventually buy their own for comfort. Popular choices include the Bose A30, LightSpeed Zulu and David Clark ranges.
10. How fast is the helicopter and what's the range?
The two-seat R22 cruises at around 80 knots (150km/h) with a range of roughly 350km in nil wind. The four-seat R44 cruises at about 120 knots (220km/h) with a range of around 500km, making both capable of comfortable day trips around South East Queensland.
11. How do I keep my licence current?
You must keep your aviation medical certificate valid and complete a Flight Review with an instructor every two years. There’s no minimum number of flying hours required annually, but staying current is your responsibility, and flying without a valid medical or review carries strict penalties.
12. Is the medical tough to pass?
Most students pass their Class 2 medical without issue. It includes eye, ear, blood and urine tests, and an ECG may be required on your first exam. CASA publishes a detailed medical certification guide if you’d like to know exactly what’s involved.

13. What scenic helicopter flights does V2 Helicopters offer?
We fly a range of scenic tours from Archerfield, including Brisbane City, City & Mountain Views, Sunset City & Mountain flights, Moreton Bay and Stradbroke Island, Glasshouse Mountains, and longer Gold Coast beach and hinterland tours. Flights suit everything from a quick city loop to a full Queensland coastal adventure.
14. How long does a scenic flight take?
Scenic flights range from short 10 to 15-minute city loops up to longer one to two-hour tours over the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay or Scenic Rim. The right length depends on how much of South East Queensland you want to see and your budget.
15. How many people can come on a scenic flight?
Our helicopters seat two to four passengers depending on the aircraft, and we also offer shared “standby seat” flights for solo flyers or couples wanting a lower-cost option. Larger groups can be accommodated across multiple aircraft — just let us know your numbers when booking.
16. Do I need any flying experience to take a scenic flight?
None at all. Scenic flights are designed for everyone, from first-time flyers to seasoned aviation fans. You’ll get a safety briefing before takeoff, and our pilots handle everything in the air while pointing out landmarks along the way.
17. Can I bring a camera or phone on board?
Yes, and we encourage it. Our aircraft offer excellent visibility for photos and video, and pilots will often position the helicopter for the best angles over landmarks like the Brisbane River, Story Bridge or Moreton Bay. Just keep loose items secured during the flight.
18. What's the best time of day for a scenic flight?
Early morning and late afternoon generally give the softest light and calmest air, while our sunset flights are popular for the colour they add over the city and coastline. Any time of day works well though — Queensland’s clear skies suit flying most of the year.
19. Are scenic flights suitable for kids or older passengers?
Yes, with a few practical considerations. Children usually need to meet a minimum age or size for the harness system, and passengers with mobility or health concerns should let us know in advance so we can plan boarding and seating comfortably. Just ask our team when booking.

20. What is a private helicopter charter?
A private charter is a flight built entirely around your plans — destination, timing and group size — rather than a set scenic route. Popular uses include weddings, proposals, corporate transfers, golf days, race days and point-to-point travel across South East Queensland.
21. Can I design my own custom flight route?
Absolutely. Just tell us where you’d like to go and when, and we’ll put together a private itinerary around it, whether that’s a winery lunch, a weekend getaway, or transport between two specific locations. Landing sites just need suitable space and landowner permission.
22. Do you offer helicopter charters for weddings and proposals?
Yes — we regularly fly wedding entrances and exits, proposal flights and anniversary charters across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. These flights are fully private and can be timed around your ceremony or planned as a surprise, with routes tailored to the moment.
23. Can you arrange corporate or event transfers?
Yes. We run corporate charters, formal event transfers, golf tour flights and race day charters for businesses and groups wanting to skip traffic or arrive in style. Flights can be scheduled around your event timing and scaled up using multiple aircraft for larger groups.
24. How far in advance should I book a charter?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for weekends, weddings and peak events like race days, since aircraft and time slots are limited. That said, we’ll always do our best to accommodate shorter-notice requests where availability allows.
25. Is a charter flight more expensive than a scenic flight?
Charter flights are generally priced by aircraft type and flight time rather than a fixed scenic package, since routes and distances vary. Costs depend on the aircraft, duration and any special requirements, so we provide a tailored quote once we know your plans.

26. How much does a helicopter flight cost?
Scenic flights start from around $97 for a shared standby seat, with set-route tours ranging up to around $1,750 for longer coastal experiences. Training packages range from a $3,696 theory-only course to a full PPL package. Charter pricing is quoted individually based on aircraft and flight time.

29. What happens if the weather is bad on my flight day?
Safety comes first, so we won’t fly in unsuitable weather. If conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll work with you to reschedule your flight or lesson for the next available opportunity, with minimal disruption to your plans wherever possible.
30. Is helicopter flying safe?
V2 Helicopters operates under a Safety Management System with professional maintenance partnerships and CASA-regulated procedures. Our aircraft are maintained to strict standards, our pilots and instructors are experienced, and every flight — training, scenic or charter — follows the same safety-first approach.
31. Are there weight or health restrictions for passengers?
Our aircraft have maximum weight limits per seat, so we may ask for approximate passenger weights when booking to plan the flight safely. Passengers with significant mobility or health concerns should mention this at booking so we can prepare appropriately.
32. Can I buy a helicopter flight as a gift?

34. Where do flights depart from?
All V2 Helicopters flights — training, scenic and charter — depart from Hangar 219 at Archerfield Airport, Brisbane, unless a custom charter itinerary has been arranged for a different departure point.
